    Hello All,

I'm in Southern California and reenact as Kate Cumming, Nurse Matron of the Confederate Army of Tennessee from 1862-1865. I'm relatively new (3 years) to reenacting and have a lot to learn! I prepare myself to portray Kate by learning the songs and poetry she would have grown up hearing, copying her journal with a dip pen, reading period literature, and reading histories that help me understand the battles of the War.

I'm attached to the 1st Division Field Hospital, which alternates between Union and Confederate hands, depending on the reenactment. Since we may be in Union or Confederate territory, several of us nurses are looking at developing two personae - one Union and one Confederate. I have chosen Harriet Eaton of Maine as my Union persona, and hope to dive into her journal, "This Birth Place of Souls," very soon.

All the nurses (4 of us) in the hospital sing, and we have formed a choir which performs at reenactments, both on the stage and informally for troops as they are forming up.

I hope to find nuggets of information and wisdom here, and maybe pass along my own little gems to you as well.

    Very kind regards,
    Laura Drexler

Welcome, I am also in SoCal... And if you live in San Diego please feel free to join the San Diego Civil War Round Table that meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Here is a blurb from this months newsletter.

The 362nd meeting of the San Diego Civil War Round Table will begin at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at the Palisades Presbyterian Church at 6301 Birchwood Street in the Allied Gardens community of San Diego. Mr. Tim Charlesworth will present “USS Camanche and the Civil War Defenses of San Francisco”.

Yes! The name is spelled correctly. We will explain why during another episode from my series entitled Unique Places from the US Civil War. Mr. Charlesworth will be talking about the genesis and the unique history of this unique American naval vessel, the USS “Camanche”, and its place in the defense of San Francisco during the Civil War. We will start with shaping the events which paralleled California’s entry into the Union ten years before the Civil War and how these events found San Francisco unprepared and undefended prior to the start of the war before concluding with the stopgap efforts to fend off Confederate invasion or raiding attempts.

I hope to see you next Wednesday and bring a friend so they too can enjoy the history of the Snake Bit Monitor.
