Hello from Columbus, Georgia. My Great Grandfather, fought under McCulloch, Van Dorn, Bishop General Polk and Forrest. While R&R at Polk residence, Hamilton Place, he met his future wife, Frances Ann Polk. I know very little about his military experience other than his last battle was Selma with Forrest.

Arrgh. This is one of thise regiments that gives me a headache trying to follow its history & organization.
    Quoting Dunbar Rowland:

Forty-seventh in the consecutive list, called Forty-second in early rolls and Fourth in officiak records.
Colonels: Edward Dillon assigned July 21, 1864.
(I dont see where Dillon held a lower rank in this regt.)
This regimentwas formed upon the nucleus if Gordon's Battalion.

    More later.

Col. Dillon is mentioned on Rowland's history of Powers Regiment. This refers to 1863, before he took command of 2d Miss Cavalry.

Welcome to Civil War Talk @Polk'spast Happy to have you aboard.

Dillon was appointed 1st Lieu Sept 15, 1861 (to rank March 16, 1861; confirmed Jan 28, 1862) on McCulloch's staff. Looks like VanDorn appointed him Chief of Commissary Army of the West with a rank of Major on May 24, 1862 (approved Nov 3, 1862) and was relived from that duty June 14, 1863 and was ordered to report to JEB Stuart. Stuart had no command to offer him, so he was sent to Bragg and appointed Col 2nd MS Sept 11, 1863. He surrendered under Gen Taylor and signed the parole of honor May 16, 1865 at Columbus MS.

Nice find. I couldn't find anything.
What McCulloch? "Black Bob" McCulloch or the command in Missouri?

I found it at Fold 3. It was Benjamin McCulloch the one in Missouri that was killed at Pea Ridge. After McCulloch was killed, Dillon served on VanDorn's staff. For a summary, see page 17 of the records that @7th Mississippi Infantry posted above.

    Oh. I missed that attachment.

Sure looks like he was with Van Dorn on his Holly Springs Raid.
