I have a friend that has a union great coat pattern and another friend that is a tailor. What material should I use to make my great coat, should I get the kersy material that my trousers are made of or should I get a material like what my sack coat is made of except in the light blue?

I'm not certain of my accuracy here, I'm going w/ what I have purchased. My great coat is the same material as my trousers. 22 oz wool w/ a heavy white liner. I belive Period Impression patterns have historical notes. It might be worth asking CJ Daley http://www.cjdaley.com/overcoats.htm as he offers a Great Coat that is reknown for its accuracy. It had best be for the price.

Good Luck

Jimbos,

The fabric used in your great coat should be sky blue Kersey. If you have an accurate reproduction pattern and want good fabric, Charlie Childs is a great person to go to. His website is http://www.crchilds.com/id41.htm

I would echo the sentiments on Mr. Daley’s great coats, they are a great deal, and very accurate, but you may have to be prepared to wait a little while to get one.

Your most humble servant,

Chase Pinkham
