That incident is even funnier! It was the fourth time Grant had been cited for buggy racing - had a need for speed! Because he was a repeat offender, they actually arrested him and hauled him down to the station. Then they discovered they were in a pickle - could they really arrest a sitting president? Did Congress have to impeach him first? Would that happen for speeding? Oh...my... Yes, Mr President, we'll just take the fine...and you can go on home... :running:

It's gotten a little more in fines plus they didn't have speed or red light cameras back then. Kind of hard for Alexander Gardner or Matthew Brady to stand out in the middle of the street to take a very blurry or non existent photo.:giggle:

That takes some balls to arrest the POTUS. I'd have just told him to slow down and have a nice day.

I'm liking Grant's style though. Wonder if this is how congress, etc.. were eventually given immunity for speeding if on "official business".
