His engineering skills helped plan New York City's Central Park.At the start of the war he enlisted in a regiment that was largely composed of fellow Navy Yard workers. This regiment later became part of General Sickles' Excelsior Brigade.

Graham was a friend of Dan Sickles in New York City. Sickles used his political clout to help Graham obtain his position in the Brookly Naval Yard. It was at Sickles' request that he became involved in drawing the plans for Central Park.

From April 28, 1864 to Febuary 17, 1865 Graham commanded the Naval Brigade in the Army of the James. It does sound somewhat self explanatory but could anyone explain exactly what the Naval Brigade was?

@Mark F. Jenkins provided some details on the formation and duties of the Naval Brigade in some posts from 2014.
