I presume he went further west because his unit had merged with the 25th Louisiana and another colonel (presumably CHarles Zacharie) was already present to command.

1862 – 1864: Colonel of 16th Louisiana Infantry Regiment
"Louisianians In The Western Confederacy" by Stuart Salling, pg 40 & 57.

According to this source, Colonel Randall Gibson's brigade was reorganized after April 28, 1862, and assigned to 2nd Brigade of Ruggles' division and placed under the command of Colonel(?) Daniel Gober. From April 6 to August 15, the three brigades of Ruggles' division was reorganized at least 3 times. Colonel Gober's brigade now consisted of 11th, 15th, 18th & 19th Louisiana Regiments.
By June 30, this Second Brigade was under the command of Colonel August Reichard and additional units; 45th Alabama, 11th, & 20th Louisiana Regiments.
Colonel Gober returned to command the 16th Louisiana Regiment under Colonel Daniel W. Adams command.
