If Gilbert Van Zandt wasn't actually the youngest boy to enlist in the war, he apparently was the youngest with an Ohio regiment. He's remembered on Find-A-Grave, and I thought CWT might like to remember him here. His story is also told in a book for young readers by Marilyn Weymouth Seguin, "Gilbert Vanzandt: The Story of a Civil War Drummer Boy and His Pony, Fannie Lee." An anecdote is shared here, about a choice President Andrew Johnson offered to Gilbert after the war: he could attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or keep the pony he used during the war. Guess which one he chose!

I think Joseph Fissell was the youngest from Ohio. Born 9/19/52, enlisted in A, 45 Oh on 8/1/62 - age about 9 years 11 months. Gilbert was born 12/20/51 and enlisted in D, 79 Oh on 10/31/62, age about 10 years and 10 months.
