As a kid my dad would often mention that family members of ours (serving the confederacy out of Tennessee) walked home from North Carolina after the war. They were from western Tennessee. As a kid I didnt really think much on it but reflecting now I am amazed what a journey it must have been. I see amny Tennessee units who were released around the Greensboro area. Does anyone know if there is anything written about their journey home. Or have any info on how long route taken etc. Any info is appreciated.

It's 1863 about the first of September and you're in Front Royal VA trying to make it to Baltimore MD. You're a male civilian. What would be the quickest, best way to get from VA to MD?
Thanks so much
Jeanne
