General Patrick Cleburne

Traitor to the United States.
I would actually give Cleburne a pass on that charge. As an immigrant who settled and made a successful non-slave owning life for himself in Arkansas (yes, he briefly spent time in Ohio), his experience and life passage were influenced by his strong connection to Helena, his adopted hometown, rather than to the more theoretical concept of being a citizen of the United States. No wonder that when Arkansas seceded, Cleburne followed in the steps of his neighbors and compatriots. Of course, it would have been a greater good had he stayed in Ohio and joined the Union cause.
