Sidney Smith Lee Jr, known as "Smith" Lee, was the fifth son of Commodore Sidney Smith Lee, brother of General Robert E. Lee, and Anna Maria Mason, grand-daughter of George Mason. One of his brothers was General Fitzhugh Lee. He served as a Lieutenant in the Confederate Navy, and was a crew-member of the CSS Shenandoah, which took and burned 38 Northern whaling ships in the Pacific without the loss of life on either side, and sailed around the world. Some of these ships were taken after Robert E. Lee's surrender, which caused some in the North to accuse the Shenandoah of piracy. The ship sailed to England after the war, and most of the officers settled in South America because of being possibly charged with piracy.

I wonder if Sidney Smith Lee senior, born in 1802, was named for the famous British naval officer of the period, in which case it would be a good omen for his career.
