Lookout was a rich chestnut color and nearly 17 hands high. He was 3/4 bred being by Mambrino out of a 1/2 bred mare. He was bred in Kentucky and had been owned by Mr. Ten Broeck.

The horse was brought to New York City. The Emperor of France tried to buy him several times for $1000. However , he was purchased by General Joseph Hooker.

Lookout got his name from the famous battle of Lookout Mt. He was known as the finest charger in the Union Army. He dwarfed all other horses. The General was known as a superb rider. They made a very handsome pair.

Gen. Hooker and Lookout at the Battle Of Lookout Mountain. This horse is shown in other paintings as the horse Hooker was riding at the Battle of Lookout Mountain, and and made mention of Hooker on the white horse. Will the real Lookout stand up.
