The October 7, 1864 Battle of Darbytown and New Market Roads is considered General Lee's last offensive north of the James River. Because Lee did not achieve his objectives it is considered a Union victory. It appears that that one of the sad outcome of the battle was that Alabamian turned Texan Brigadier General John Gregg was killed. I was wondering what people thought of General Gregg? He was a political general but seems to have fought fairly well in the Western Theater where he was wounded in the neck. After recovery he was given command of Hood's Texas Brigade and seems to have preformed well until he was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness. He was shot again in the neck at the Battle of Darbytown and New Market Roads and died.
Despite being a political general he seemed to have performed reasonably well but he was probably not outstanding seeming to have his ups and downs. So in your opinion was Gregg a fairly good officer or more or less a failure?
