On July 4, 1863, the Bgde & the 36th Ark served in the attack on the federal post at Helena, Ark, & subsequently in the defense of Little Rock in Sept, 1863.

On Sept 30, the 36th Ark was consolidated into five Co's. The Bgde, now under the command of Lucian Gause & composed of the 26th, 32nd, & 36th Ark Regts, spent the winter of 1863 southwest of Little Rock, & then was sent south with Gen Churchill's Ark Infy Div to Shreveport in the early spring of 1864 to assist Gen Kirby Smith's army in countering Union Gen Nathaniel Banks' advance along the Red River.

After fighting in the battle of Pleasant Hill, La, Churchill's Div & Kirby Smith then marched back to Ark to assist Gen Price in dealing with the other half of the Red River campaign, Union Gen'ls Frederick Steele's Camden Expedition moving southwest from Little Rock. The Div & Hawthorn's Bgde arrived in time to join the pursuit of Steele's army as it retreated from Camden, & join in the attack on Steele as he tried to cross the Saline River at Jenkins' Ferry on April 30, 1864.

Gause's Bgde returned to the vicinity of Camden following Jenkins' Ferry, & saw no substantial combat for the remainder of the war. In Sept, 1864, the 36th was reassigned to Gen Roane's 1st Ark Bgde. The Regt ultimately surrendered with Kirby Smith's army on May 26, 1865.
