July 1863, it was determined that General Garrard had an incurable rupture within his left eye. At the time he was mustered out of the army in 1864, records indicate he had lost complete sight in his left eye, and nearly all in his right eye.

After making the rank of general, he led a brigade under General McClernand through the Vicksburg Campaign. He was however relieved and ordered elsewhere on the final day of assaulting that city. Who's Who in the Civil War says he was transferred to Arkansas but also states that He also commanded the District of Someret, Kentucky in this same time period. Which was it?

The accompanying newspaper article mentions his feud with a Dougherty White. Each time Garrard ran for State Senate (and won) White was the opponent plus he just happened to be a next door neighbor and ran a rival salt works.

There seems to be a gap in General Samuel Carter's biography. It doesn't list his whereabouts from July of 1862 to March 1863. It was in this time period that Garrard briefly served on Carter's staff.Carter was promoted on May 1, 1862 and Garrard was promoted to brigadier on Nov.29, 1862. Why was a brigadier serving on another brigadier's staff?
