While not as famous as his fellow Badeners Franz Sigel and Carl Schurz, Hubert Anton Casimir Dilger should still be remembered. Dilger immigrated to the United States. He became the commander of Battery I, 1st Ohio Light Artillery. He was given the nickname "Leatherbreeches" because he ditched his cloth trousers and adopted tougher leather trousers. Some consider Hurbert one of the Union's finest artillerist. During the Battle of Chancellorsville and fought a last ditch rear guard action that held up much of Stonewall Jackson's Corps. He won the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Chancellorsville. His battery also killed General Leonidas Polk. After the Civil War he eventually became the Adjutant General of the Ohio National Guard. His son Anton Dilger became a well-known traitor when during World War One he waged a biological warfare sabotage operation against a still neutral United State. Anton brought anthrax and glander from Germany and used them to killed horses so the U.S. could not sell horses to Great Britain. He painted the anthrax and glander on the noses of horses to spread the illnesses in the horse population.
