Here is a great little article from the capt of the CSS Cotton which show that necessity is indeed the mother of invention. The cotton only had 2 guns a 9lber and a 32lber. She was only in 2 engagements and both were against 4 yankee gunboats. One report I read says that one of the yankee boats sustained over 50 hits so now can see why the ran out of ammo.

That reminds me of a story from the 3 month 1st Ohio light artillery. When they enlisted, they were sent directly to Marietta Ohio. Marietta was threatened, and there were no other troops to send. The state provided them with 'ammunition' - rifle powder and undersized shot. the residents of Marietta were grateful for the arrival of the 1st and pitched in to help. The men of the town made sabots, and the women stiched up cartridge bags from whatever they could find. This allowed the 1st to do some practice and have ammunition ( while not correct, at least usable) until proper supplies arrived.
