Hey guys,

We are french students, in grade 11th and we have to do a file about Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery. We have hoped that you could answer to these questions :

Did the American Nation need a hero (Abraham Lincoln) during the hard period of the Civil War ?

Why Abraham Lincoln is still considerated as a hero nowadays ?

Thanks for your consideration and answers!

At the time of Lincoln's presidency, he was a hero to some, and something much less to others. This depended on a person's political views and the actions the armies took. For the most part, folks north of the Mason-Dixon line held Lincoln in high esteem. Folks south of the Mason-Dixon line generally looked upon Lincoln as, among other things, a monster of sorts. Both the Union and the Confederacy had their own ideas of what made a hero and who qualified.

It wasn't until after his death that Lincoln was seen by a goodly number of Americans as a hero, on both sides of the battle. Per Merriam-Webster, the definition of hero is one, who in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, displays courage and will for self sacrifice - that is heroism - for some greater good of all humanity. Lincoln did sacrifice much of himself and came from a lowly background to rise to the position of the highest office of the land, at a time of great conflict.

As the decades passed into the next 150 yrs, Lincoln and his life and efforts in running the country have been seen more and more in the light of "hero". In asking this question today, views still vary. It is the general consensus that Lincoln is a hero.

Greetings,

Much of President Lincolns status as a hero came after he was assassinated. The fact that he was murdered in cold blood made him a martyr , and his legend grew larger and larger. Mr. Lincoln was truly gifted in many ways and gave this country hope when possibly no one else could. He may have had flaws, as all of us do, but he was a great man and deserving of his fame.

I'll just add to the excellent answers above by saying that I think what has made Lincoln a hero (with most Americans) more than anything else is that he was able to fight a war hard enough to win it (and that could be pretty hard, at times), but do so "with malice toward none, with charity for all." His role in ending slavery was important, but he shared that role with many others. Winning a war without demonizing his adversary was something quite unique.

Right here.
There is a very short book by Frank Williams called Lincoln as Hero that might be a good source for you. You can read it in a day. I don't know if it has been translated into French though.
