My task for the new year is to continue my research for the book I intend to write about my gg-grandfather, a free man of color in Tennessee who ended up serving in both the Confederate and Union armies during the War.

Does anyone know of good books about free blacks? I've already read 'What Blood Won't Tell' and had a look at 'Slaves Without Masters', both of which were interesting, but the second one didn't seem to reflect my ancestor's circumstances very well.

Most of the historical works concerning African-American history concentrate on slavery, which I understand as there were so many more slaves than free blacks, but surely there must be more out there. Any ideas?
