No,,my grandfather found this and a bunch full of other stuff when he served in the CCC cleaning up the battlefield in the late 1930s,,he said it all came from one place,,melted buckle,, Springfield musket parts, (he said he left the musket barrel because it wouldn't fit in the box he had to ship home) musket tool, whack of buttons, bayonet, almost all the complete hardware from a knapsack, as if it might have all been from one soldier. He wished they had metal detectors,,as everything was found by chance, once one artifact was stumbled across,, he would scratch around with a shovel and sift the topsoil through his handsFound recently?
Thank youThe melted lead and hooks are from a standard US enlisted mans belt platView attachment 404517e.
I kinda thought that as well,,I never knew how bad and horrific the forest fires were during the wilderness battle until reading more recently.Presumably, the buckle got partially melted by the forest fires that raged during the battle...seems like a real possibility.
Many artifacts found at the Wilderness show signs of fire. Most from the battle but then there were some controlled burns in later years.I kinda thought that as well,,I never knew how bad and horrific the forest fires were during the wilderness battle until reading more recently.
Let's just hope that poor soldier left his coat and belt behind and want wearing them when they melted. That's a bad way to go even for a Yank.1st. Melted belt buckle,,federal?
