Ed Buford's 2nd cousin, E.G. "Eb" Buford was wounded in the attack of the 15th. A one-ounce ball hit him in the lung and took his musket pick with it. Also some bits of his clothing. That could have started an infection that would have killed him, so he was sent to the rear and not taken POW. Apparently the surgeon(s) got it all out or they wouldn't have been able to describe what went into the lung. He was later the Regent of Buford College in Nashville at the turn of the century.
The hotel is the only original major battle surrender structure remaining from the American Civil War.
