Thanks guys and gals for the kind words!

I highly recommend a visit to this Dover, Tennessee battlefield.

The NPS and CWT has done a wonderful job preserving this American Civil War site.

The Battle of Fort Donelson commenced on this day in 1862 and concluded on February 16, 1862.

We visited it when I was a kid. It looks so much better now. My current avatar, Ed Buford, was captured there with the 3rd Tenn and sent to Camp Douglas.

Ed Buford's 2nd cousin, E.G. "Eb" Buford was wounded in the attack of the 15th. A one-ounce ball hit him in the lung and took his musket pick with it. Also some bits of his clothing. That could have started an infection that would have killed him, so he was sent to the rear and not taken POW. Apparently the surgeon(s) got it all out or they wouldn't have been able to describe what went into the lung. He was later the Regent of Buford College in Nashville at the turn of the century.

On this day in 1862, Federal Major General Ulysses S. Grant finishes a spectacular campaign by capturing Confederate Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River in Tennessee. This battle came 10 days after Grant’s capture of Fort Henry, just 10 miles to the west on the Tennessee River, and opened the way for Federal occupation of central Tennessee.

* The Dover Hotel was the site where Federal Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant demanded "unconditional and immediate surrender" from Confederate Brigadier General Simon B. Buckner after the Battle of Fort Donelson on February 16th, 1862. The hotel is the only original major battle surrender structure remaining from the American Civil War.
