I have eight family members in Forrest's Escort. Two of them are in this photo, which was taken in front of the Lynchburg, Tennessee courthouse in 1886. The very big black man on the far right of the photo is George Dance. He was not with Forrest's Escort. He was a slave of Dr. Stephen Edward Hinton Dance, who was the Chief Surgeon of the 8th Tennessee Infantry. George was with him throughout the war. Dr. SEH Dance is my 1st cousin, 4 times removed.
George Dance received a pension for Confederate service of $10.00 a month. "Uncle George" was a regular fixture around Fayetteville, and Lynchburg for years, and can be found in many period photographs.
