You tell us, Barry. Specific details would be welcomed.

Added: I know that sounds flip, and it is. But no more so that the sarcasm of the original post.

A lot of the"evidence" presented for "black Confederates" consists of reunion images like this one, tossed out with little or no background information about who exactly the men are, or anything about them at all. Very often, when you dig into other accounts of those same reunions, the wartime distinctions between soldier and servant remained, fifty or sixty years later. That gets obfuscated -- intentionally, I believe -- when images like this get posted, when viewers are encouraged make their own assumptions about what it shows, and what it implies.

So don't just show us a picture; tell us these mens' stories. Who are they, exactly, and what did they do during the war. What was their participation in the reunion? What contemporary records are they for them? What are their stories?

If you want to honor these men, don't just toss them out as props, as examples of "black Confederates." Tell their stories as individuals. That's what I'm asking you to do here.

This photo is new to me. Just found on Facebook today. I would love to name every one and share their bio but i don't know from the photo. They have earned their honor and nothing I say or anyone on this forum will change that no matter what opinion is implied. The information is just as I posted and I added my observation.

Let say I did properly identify them as soldiers who went with Forrest Escort. Would that be acceptable or take a 25 thread post to resolve?

I have eight family members in Forrest's Escort. Two of them are in this photo, which was taken in front of the Lynchburg, Tennessee courthouse in 1886. The very big black man on the far right of the photo is George Dance. He was not with Forrest's Escort. He was a slave of Dr. Stephen Edward Hinton Dance, who was the Chief Surgeon of the 8th Tennessee Infantry. George was with him throughout the war. Dr. SEH Dance is my 1st cousin, 4 times removed.

George Dance received a pension for Confederate service of $10.00 a month. "Uncle George" was a regular fixture around Fayetteville, and Lynchburg for years, and can be found in many period photographs.

Great information and welcome.

I'm curious in looking at the photo the disarranged chairs at the right end. It seems odd to have them sitting on their sides and backs. I'd love to hear that story, too.

Does anyone have a good reference for a listing of names in the Escort Company? Good friends of mine are Browder from Arkansas and they insist their ggrandfather was in the Escort Company. A few years back I did a small amount of searching and did find listings of names but no Browder.

I am related by blood and or marriage to the Bedford family which gave the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest, I am related by marriage to General Forrest. I am related to the Boone family through marriage. Yes, that Boone family.... lol. Captain Nathan Boone, son of Benjamin, son of Samuel, brother of Squire Boone, the father of Daniel Boone.
through the Boones of Booneville, Tennessee. Daniel Boone lived on Mulberry Creek, Tennessee for a while.

I am also kin to the Motlow's and Daniel family of Lynchburg, who make that great Tennessee whiskey.

Being married to a photographer...it probably was a case of their being too tall or the backs showing up in the photos behind the guys' heads...or something like that. Photographers are weird.
