Fort Mt. Adams Cincinnati, Ohio : During the American Civil War (September, 1862) two artillery emplacements were installed on the hill to help defend the city from the Confederacy. One was installed at Fort View Place (Fort Mt. Adams) and the other near the present location of the Playhouse in the Park (Battery Butcher's Hill). These gun emplacements protected the city of Cincinnati's western flank. The guns were never fired since the Confederate army could not penetrate the various forts and batteries in the Northern Kentucky hills (Bromley to Fort Thomas, Kentucky).

These were not Forts, but Battery emplacements. There were three Forts in the defence of Cincinnati, Fort Wright and Fort Thomas were two, all three on the Kentucky side of the Ohio. Ohios three Batteries:

  • Price's Hill Battery - Located on the western edge of Cincinnati overlooking the Ohio River.
  • Mount Adams Battery - Located on the eastern side of Cincinnati near Immaculata Church on Mount Adams. The present site is known as Fort View Place.

Okay.....

Fort Thomas, Fort Wright and Fort Mitchel

I shall ask the city to rename Fort View Place to Battery View Place.

Actually, Fort Thomas was NOT a Civil War era fort. It was built after the war. Fort Whittlesey, near Fort Thomas, was the third fort, and Fort Burnside was the fourth fort.

Thanks for the excellent slide show, Bill!

Thanks, Pat!

My inspiration to seek out these Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky sites came from "The General's Tour" in a Blue & Gray issue entitled, "Panic on the Ohio" dated May of 1986.

My other inspiration came from Chester F. Gleason's book entitled, "Our Moment of Glory in the Civil War."

Awesome resources!!!
