In his early years Lincoln said his aim was to preserve the Union but he became a dedicated abolitionist.

He went so far as to say he would make every state a free state or make every state a slave state or make some free states and others slave states, depending on which measure advanced the cause of his beloved Union.

Wow, that is truly one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard anyone with a degree in history make. Just wow.

Lincoln was strongly opposed to slavery his whole life. What took him many years was finding and implementing a way to practically, legally, and Constitutionally end it.

p.s.: I wish I could "like" bn's post (#3) a dozen times! "Just WOW!" indeed.
