His predecessor ,Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase, was nominated to the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy caused by Roger Taney's death.The vacancy in the cabinet was filled by Fessenden.He served from July 5, 1864 to March 3, 1865 when he then resigned.
