Federal troops occupied Mobile in 1866 on Mardi Gras day, Confederate veteran Joe Cain, along with his band of miscreants known as the tea drinkers, paraded on a commandeered coal wagon they painted up. Joe dressed as a fictional Chickasaw Indian Chief Slacabamarinico, even this was a back handed slap at the federals since the Chickasaw fought against them during the recent war. Ol' Slac raised the spirits of the people of Mobile and this was the rebirth of Mardi Gras after the war. In Mobile today the Sunday before Fat Tuesday is Joe Cain day, and a procession is held in his honor lead by a mule and wagon and a person dressed as Chief Slac.
