February 25, 1809 - George Washington Cullom, American Brevet Major General (Union Army), born in NYC, New York (d. 1892)

February 25, 1815 - Robert Hall Chilton, Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Loudoun County, VA. (d. 1879)

February 25, 1833 - Clement Anselm Evans, Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Stewart County, GA. (d. 1911)

February 25, 1861 - President-Elect Lincoln meets with members of both houses of Congress.

February 25, 1861 - The Saratoga, a ship in the U. S. African Squadron, captures the sloop Express, a slave ship.

February 25, 1862 - First Legal Tender Act 1862 is passed by the US Congress, authorizing the United States Note (greenback) into circulation, the first fiat paper money that was legal tender in America.

February 25, 1862 - "Bull" Nelson enters Nashville, Tennessee, first Confederate state capital to fall into Union hands. Don Carlos Buell accepts the city's surrender. Nathan Bedford Forrest provides a rear guard for Hardee's Army of Central Kentucky as it withdraws to Alabama.

February 25, 1862 - Skirmish at Keetsville, Barry County, MO, with Brig. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis, USA, and the Texas Rangers.

February 25, 1863 - Skirmish at Hartwood Church, VA, with Brig. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee's, CSA, Cavalry.

February 25, 1865 - Brig. Gen. James Veatch, USA, assumes the command of the US forces on Dauphin Island, AL.

February 25, 1865 - Maj. Gen. Frederick Steele, USA, is assigned to the command of the troops operating from Pensacola Bay, FL.

February 25, 1865 - Skirmish at Piketon, KY.

February 25, 1865 - The Union forces occupy Camden, SC, on the Wateree River.

February 25, 1865 - Skirmish at West's Cross-Roads, SC.

February 25, 1865 - Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, CSA, assumes the command of the Army of Tennessee and all troops in the Confederate Dept. of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Johnston notifies Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, that he believes a combination of his troops with Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA, in North Carolina is necessary to mount any kind of obstruction to the forces under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA.

February 25, 1865 - Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, USA, assumes the command of the 13th US Army Corps, TN.

February 25, 1870 - Hiram R. Revels takes his seat in the Senate from the state of Mississippi. Revels is black.

February 25, 1897 - Congress issues its final report on the Ford's Theater disaster.
