My signature line is my favorite quote from a Civil War monument. They had a real talent for understatement in those days.

Edited later: my signature line has changed. When I posted this, I quoted the 51st NY Monument at Burnside Bridge at Antietam - "the crossing was obstinately disputed."

Of all of the pictures I have taken pictures of of grave stones, also called monuments, I do not remember seeing a quote!
But, I will an eye out for them from now on.

Let this stranger who may in future time read this inscription and recognize that there were men whom power could not corrupt, death could not terrify, defeat could not dishonor; let these virtues plead for judgment in the cause for which they perished. Let Georgia remember that the state taught them how to live and how to die; and that from her broken fortunes, she has preserved for her children, the priceless treasure of her memories, teaching all who may claim the same birthright, that truth, virtue and patriotism endure forever”.

The quote by Jefferson Davis in my signature is on the Hood's Texas Brigade memorial in Austin

I also like the quote "Double Canister at Ten Yards" on the Cowan's Battery, 1st NY Artillery monument at Cemetery Ridge, Gettysburg. The quote is from Capt. Andrew Cowan, who's battery ran up during the breakthrough at the angle and as Cowan ordered, fired double canister at ten yards into the Confederates stepping over the stone wall.

Gordon and Chamberlain were both moved by the quote on the monument to two sons one who fought for the confederacy and the other for the union, "God Alone Knows Which Was Right"
But apparently the monument never existed. I have not dug too much into that myself as of yet, but here are some sources.
