In the opening battle of 2nd Bull Run at Groveton on August 28,1862 Fairchild assumed command of the regiment upon the death of it's colonel Edgar O'Connor. This brigade would hereafter be known as the Iron Brigade.
It looks as though his appointments were also made upon merit. Not being a West Pointer but with previous militia training, and becoming a ranking officer in the AOP is no small accomplishment.
Lubliner.

Fairchild later transferred to the 2nd Wisconsin when his enlistment in the 1st Wisconsin expired. As Lt. Col. he was now part of the Iron Brigade. He was promoted to Colonel on Sept. 8, 1862.
