Exploring the factors of the Civil War

As 1864 became 1865, it might have appeared that the Civil War was winding down. It had been going on for about four years, by this point.

Still, the factors that had led to the Civil War had been going on for years.

“Whether the Civil War was preventable is a debate that began shortly after Appomattox and continues today,” writes author Lawrence M. Denton in the newly released “Unionists in Virginia: Politics, Secession and Their Plan to Prevent Civil War” (The History Press, 2014, $21.99).

Denton’s 224-page book was compiled with research assistant Jennifer Potts and tells the story of how a group of Union-loyal Virginians — including John Janney and Jubal Early — fostered ideas that war was avoidable.

This book is different than other histories, Denton points out in the preface.
