Explorers find Civil War-era artifacts from a Confederate blockade runner in Charleston Harbor

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Attention history lovers, a team of archaeologists have just made what’s being called a major discovery in the Charleston Harbor.

Exploration group, The Black Dive, say they’ve recovered a number of artifacts dating back to the Civil War. The team discovered it about four weeks ago.

Dr. Michael Torres, Ph. D., one of the explorers, believes the items came from a Confederate blockade runner. President Abraham Lincoln ordered a blockade at 12 major ports, including Charleston.

“There were 1,500 ships, not all in Charleston, but a lot went down around there,” Torres said. “Some we don’t even know about because they would have been very clandestine, they would have been a very clandestine operation, not many people have written this stuff down. They do have documented evidence of a lot of these, but I think a lot of these went off the record.”

Its interesting to read that Torres mentions a plaque, does anyone know what was on the plaque?
British coins of the same period found amongst the hoard, why am I not surprised!
