Here's a few of the mess items I've found in civil war camps in and around Vicksburg, MS.
The center piece is a skillet with a makeshift "homemade" handle.
Thanks for looking!
Yes, actually 2 sardine cans. The top one had a brass French label on it.Nice group and looks like a sardine can lower right. Union troops had all sorts of canned items.
You are certainly right about that. I think a spoon full of peas.Must be mostly from Union camps. From what I have read, by the end of the siege all the Confederate boys needed was a spoon because their rations were down to a spoonful of peas per day.
Is the skillet a canteen half, modified as many did? Nice collection, by the way!View attachment 365656

It does look like it from the photo. But no, it's just a small camp skillet. One of the legs is still present but not visible from the photo. Thanks. Is the skillet a canteen half, modified as many did? Nice collection, by the way!
You can get a metal detector fairly cheaply. In other words, you don't have to spend a whole lot of money on one. It's an exciting hobby for sure.It must be a great feeling when you find an historical item hidden under the dirt. I’d love to try metal detecting some time.
Come on!I want to go out digging with you!
