That is correct, both taught reading and writing which was against Virginia state law at the time. Considering how strongly both loved the their home state of Virginia. I wouldn't think either would have broken any law unless they felt it immoral. Teaching is teaching, Mary Lee certainly would not have taught the slaves without the approval of her husband. Jackson was very proud of his bible school and didn't care who was offended by it.

Perhaps not higher education but education none the less.

I agree Lee probably knew what she was doing. Did he approve or did he just realize she felt strongly and didn't get in her way? If it was her idea and she implemented it can we say he did any education or rather should we say he stood by while Mary Lee taught them how to read?
