Another Civil War era ancestor / relative
Elizabeth Jane Blakely Short: 3 x great-aunt (paternal side). Born in Virginia about 1818. Died in Sullivan County, (east) Tennessee, June 25, 1902. Elizabeth was an older sister to Union soldiers, William Andrew Blakely, Company A 1st TN Cavalry and (Andrew) Jackson Blakely, Company G 8th TN Cavalry (paternal grandfather of my paternal grandmother). Elizabeth's baby brother, Henry Carter Blakely, was a Confederate in Company B 61st TN Infantry. Jackson and Henry both died in the war. Her son, James Short, born about 1843-1845, died serving in the Union Army. Little is known of Elizabeth's husband. He apparently died before the war, deserted the family, or he and Elizabeth were divorced. Elizabeth bore a son out of wedlock in April 1860 that took the Short surname
James Short: Born in Sullivan County, (east) TN. He enlisted there on 10/25/1863. On 11/7/1863 he mustered into "G" Co. TN 8th Cavalry as an 18-year-old Private. This was six days after his uncle, Jackson Blakely, a new recruit in the 8th TN Cavalry, was captured by the Rebels in a skirmish at Zollicoffer, TN. Conflicting reports say James died of wounds in Knoxville either December 1863 or January 1864. Wounds possibly received during the siege of Knoxville. Thanks go out to Zella for assistance with James Short's service record.
