Thrasher?

That is an extremely uncommon name. One of the men you could claim that founded the city of Atlanta was John J. Thrasher. He was hired to build a viaduct over a low spot for the W&A RR on the spot Atlanta sits now. The workers pitched tents in the area to live in and the community became known as Thrasherville. The RR ended about half a mile away and became Terminus, then Marthasville, then Atlanta.

There was more to the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team's name than just the bird. The viaduct can still be seen in a lower parking deck underneath Phillip's Arena in which they played.

Not sure if this would be the same man or not. I wouldn't think it would be as he lived in Tennessee.
It would be possible though if the Illinois unit was here in TN. My ggg-grandfather Samuel Todd lived here in TN but he joined an Iowa unit because they were in this area.

Shows they were in Mississippi. Could have followed the army there after mustering out of the Tennessee unit. The 124th mustered out at Camp Douglas, Illinois in August 65. If he as with them he would have fought at Spanish Fort, Alabama.

I had a several relatives in the Union 3rd TN Mounted Infantry in east Tennessee. It was described even by Union folk as " no more than a well- organized band of outlaws. " It was made up of mainly rebel deserters. All the mounted infantry regiments the Union formed in Tennessee late in the war were a rough bunch. Most all I believe were 90-day regiments.
The same was said in Union reports about the 5th Tenn Cav (US) commanded by Col. Stokes. Tinker Dave Beaty, an independent, rode with them against Champ Ferguson and some of my ancestors.

Looks like a bad man !
