Some do. The best base their judgments on what those men said and did in a number of places, especially their private writings, which is something Eisenhower didn't do.
That is like reading an email--no facial expression, tone of voice, body language. It is often quoted that 80% of communication is NON-verbal. Words fixed at a certain point in time reveal only a small portion of an individuals character and beliefs unless they have written an autobiography or treatise on their personal beliefs or philosophy.

What Eisenhower said is interesting for his opinion, but he's being quoted because it's supposed to prove something about Lee which is not warranted by Eisenhower's training, expertise, or experience.

When Ike comments on Lee as a general, then he's within his realm of expertise and his words are authoritative. When he comments on things outside that, then his opinion doesn't matter.
We all judge people every day on less information than exists about either of these men.

None of that supports Eisenhower's ability to authoritatively comment on Lee outside Lee a general.(Quote)
Since he was a career soldier, then a college president we should probably leave it to God Almighty to judge his life.
