Dramatic Letter Written 150 Years Ago Today

150 years ago today, my great-great grandfather Adj. William B. Phillips wrote this brief but dramatic letter "on ammunition box" from Brandy Station. A few hours after jotting down the letter his regiment along with the rest of Burnside's IX Army Corp crossed the Rapidan River and entered the Wilderness to confront Lee's army. Eight weeks later, after the longest and most brutal period of combat in the Civil War, he was captured at the Crater. The letter can be read at:
