Dozens gather in Bridgeton cemetery for Confederate Memorial Day event
BRIDGETON • A group of men from the St. Louis region claiming lineage to soldiers who fought for the South in the Civil War gathered here Sunday for an annual Confederate Memorial Day event, which this year was weighed down by national momentum to remove statues and flags they cherish.
On Friday, city leaders in New Orleans plucked a large bronze statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee from a 60-foot column, the last of four Confederate monuments recently taken away there.
