It seems, following his death, his regiment was given to John C. Tidball, the artillery commander for 2nd Corps and future Governor of Alaska.
 
It appears that General Abner Doubleday had 2 brothers who were colonels in the Union Army, Thomas and Ulysses.Plus a nephew , Lt.Stephen Ward, who served in his father's (Thomas) regiment.
