I was just looking at a reference book on laws passed by the Mississippi legislature in the 19th Century, and one law caught my attention:

"Husband serving in Federal army or residing in Federal states made cause for divorce." Passed by the legislature in November 1861. It would be interesting to know how many women in the state took advantage of this new law to rid themselves of a husband in the Federal army.

I don't know but you need to ask my 1st wife as she divorced me while I was stationed in Germany, Best think that ever happened to me :D

I imagine that there were quite a few ladies glad to be rid of their pesky menfolk...so many marriages made for convienience, or for social status/dowry..and not being compatable? “He deserted me for the army, leaving me with no means of support” would carry quite a bit of weight in the court.
