Missouri may best reflect the Civil War's rending of our nation. Prior to the Civil War, the state was bitterly divided between pro-slavery secessionists and those determined to preserve the Union. The Missouri Compromise, the Dred Scott Case and the Missouri-Kansas border conflicts exposed the simmering tensions. Claimed by both the Union and the Confederacy, two state governments grappled for control of Missouri. Today, Missouri and its role in the Civil War continue to generate controversy among historians, academics and Civil War enthusiasts.

To commemorate the Civil War sesquicentennial--and to explore the complexities of the Civil War in the twenty-fourth state--the Missouri History Museum's comprehensive exhibit, The Civil War in Missouri, will feature compelling artifacts, imagery and interactive elements. Although the exhibition addresses issues with which our entire nation wrestled, topics that are distinctively Missourian will take center stage.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Missouri History Museum has launched a website, civilwarmo.org, which offers in-depth information on the Civil War in Missouri.

As a member of the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District (ZMD), the Missouri History Museum receives property tax support from the citizens of St. Louis City and St. Louis County. Financial support from these taxes assists the Missouri History Museum with exhibition development and design, conservation of artifacts and documents and educational programming. As a "thank you" for their tax support, residents of St. Louis City and St.
Louis County receive complimentary admission to the Missouri History Museum's special exhibitions on Tuesdays, 2 p.m.-8 p.m. To receive a complimentary ticket, St. Louis City and St. Louis County residents must present a Missouri Driver License or a Missouri ID Card prior to entering the gallery.

Saturday, April 14 and Sunday April 15 is the annual GO! St. Louis Marathon and Family Fitness Weekend. The activities will minimally affect Forest Park traffic. Please visit GO! St. Louis for details on road closures. Marathon organizers anticipate the last marathon participant will exit the park at approximately 10:45 a.m. Please plan your visit accordingly.
(PLEASE NOTE: Exhibition dates are subject to change. Confirm dates prior to your museum visit.)
