Did Thomas' prickly sense of honor cost lives?

I would argue that it did when it came to replacing Buell. He should have jumped at the chance to replace Buell. Buell was the wrong man at the wrong job at the wrong place, Buell was going to be replaced. Replacing him with Rosecrans was a horrible mistake both for the troops and himself.

I also think that Thomas should have bee in charge at Chickamauga. Rosecrans was too valuable a soldier to be dumped afterwards, but given Rosecrans excitable personality he was the wrong man for command. He should have been in a subordinate but high position. The imense amount of really impressive staff work staff work he did showed he needed to be in a high job, just not that one.

Fundamentally Rosecrans verbal abuse prevented the commander from asking questions about a mistaken order. Thousands died because of it
