A while back, I remember seeing a segment in Episode 4 of Ken Burns Civil War documentary series that discussed divisions within the Confederacy. One part of this segment that stood out was the friction between Jefferson Davis and some of the Southern state Governor's, in particular Georgia's Joseph Brown, over whether the Confederacy should have a centralized government or was fighting for states rights. This led to a comment from historian Stephen B. Oates were he mentioned that Jefferson Davis was supposedly quoted as saying that he wished he had the kind of Presidential powers that Lincoln had and that ultimately the issue of states rights sealed the Confederacy's fate. Would you agree or disagree with this theory?
