I read that the mortar at Petersburg isn't the real Dictator. They don't know what happened to the real one. I was up at The House On The Rock at Spring Green, Wis. a few years ago and right out front of the house was a hug mortar. I t looked just like the Dictator. At that time there was nothing telling what it was or where it came from. Do any of you have any info on this mortar?

I don't know what happened to it afterwards but I recall it only fired a few rounds before the muzzle split. probably melted it down.

The Dictator was a heavy 13-inch seacoast mortar weighing over 17,000 pounds. Cast at the Fort Pitt Foundry in 1862, its whereabouts are now unknown, and this famous weapon may no longer survive. Apparently it is often confused with No. 95, at Hartford, Connecticut, but that piece does not match the recorded weight of the Dictator.
