This recipe for Devil's Food Cake is from "Old Time Recipes To Enjoy". "The Kentucky Explorer.

    Devil's Food Cake
One half cup of butter, two cups of sugar, one cup of milk, two and one half cups of flour, four teaspoonfuls of baking powder, two squares of bitter chocolate, and one teaspoonful of vanilla. Cream butter and sugar, add yolks of eggs that are beaten thick, and baking powder sifted together. Stir in flavoring last and bake 45 to 55 minutes.

This is always a favorite cake for me.

Bumping this recipe as today May 19th is Devil's Food Cake Day.

It is my son's birthday also. If he were here would bake him a Devil's Food Cake. He always liked them.

Does anybody know why is it called Devil's Food Cake? As opposed to Angel Food Cake?
Or because you would sell your soul for a slice of it?
Or maybe because it's so good, eating it must be a sin...
Or will you become too greedy for more? (Greed being one of the deadly sins?!)

I don't think that you have to consider people who eat it as Devils!!

@donna, Happy Birthday to your son from me also!

Angel food cake is a completely different type of cake which is very light as a devils food cake is very much on the heavy side.

They say it is called Devil Food because it is sinfully delicious. But I believe it is how you perceive it. If you love chocolate as I do, Devil's Food Cake is heavenly.

Exactly! It's ironic given that Satan isn't known for being tasty. If it's a contest for my blackened soul and it comes to a choice between chocolate cake and whatever floofy nonsense angel food cake is made of, I guess I'll have to spend eternity roasting.

    With chocolate cake.

My mom always made a Devil's Food Chocolate Cake for my birthday. Wonderful memories! Loved it with a glass of cold milk. Happy Birthday to your son @donna!
