December 31, 1815 - Major General George Gordon Meade born, Cadiz, Spain.

December 31, 1825 - Francis Trowbridge Sherman, American Brigadier General (Union Army), born in Newtown, Connecticut (d. 1905)

December 31, 1860 - Charleston is notified by telegraph that a man of war with troops is on the way to Fort Sumter.

December 31, 1862 - Battle of Parker's Crossroads. Near Lexington General Nathan Bedford Forrest [CS] tries to break through a federal line after successful raids on Grant's supply lines and communications. As he begins to drive the Union troops back he is attacked from behind, loosing 300 men.

December 31, 1862 - Battle of Stone's River [US] - Battle of Murfreesboro [CS]. Braxton Bragg forces William Rosecrans to retreat, but Rosecrans returns to defeat Bragg on January 2, 1863.

December 31, 1862 - Brig. Gen. James Edward Rains, CSA, is mortally wounded while leading his men in a charge against a Federal battery, dying instantly from a rifle shot at the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN.

December 31, 1862 - Brig. Gen. Edward Needles Kirk, USA, is mortally wounded while leading his command at the Battle of Stone's River, TN.

December 31, 1862 - Brig. Gen. Joshua Woodrow Sill, USA, is instantly killed while leading his men at the Battle of Stone's River, TN.

December 31, 1862 - Lincoln signs the act approving admission to the United States for West Virginia.

December 31, 1862 - Brig. Gen. John B. Marmaduke's, CSA, Confederate expedition into Missouri. (Dec 31- Jan 25)
