December 23, 1843 - Sergeant Richard Conner, American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient born in Philadelphia, PA. (d. 1924)

December 23, 1860 - President Buchanan, tipped to upcoming problems for Secretary of War John Floyd, requests his resignation.

December 23, 1861 - At a Cabinet meeting President Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward present their response to the British note protesting the Trent Affair.

December 23, 1861 - Cols. James Abram Garfield and Marshall's, USA, Operations in Eastern Kentucky. (Dec 23-Jan 30)

December 23, 1861 - Union forces advance from Louisa, KY.

December 23, 1861 - Skirmish at Dayton, MO.

December 23, 1861 - Federal Expedition to Lexington, MO, by Brig. Gen. John Pope, USA, and his Cavalry.

December 23, 1862 - Jefferson Davis issues a general order proclaiming Benjamin Butler an "enemy of mankind" and authorizing his immediate execution if captured.

December 23, 1862 - Skirmish on the St. Francis Road, near Helena, AR, with the Texas Rangers surprising the Union outpost pickets, killing and capturing 18.

December 23, 1862 - Maj. Gen. Simon Buckner, CSA, assumes the command of the District of the Gulf, LA.

December 23, 1862 - Federal operations in the Sugar Creek Hills, MO, in pursuit of various Rebel guerrilla bands. (Dec 23-31)

December 23, 1862 - Lieut. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith, CSA, resumes the command of the Dept. of East Tennessee.

December 23, 1862 - Skirmish near Nashville, TN, as the Confederates continue to harass the Union foraging parties, this time by the Texas Rangers, who capture the advance vedettes of Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan's, USA.

December 23, 1863 - Skirmish at Jacksonport, AR.

December 23, 1863 - Skirmish near Corinth, MS, where the Confederates ambush the 3rd IL Cavalry.

December 23, 1863 - Lieut. Gen. Leonidas Polk, CSA, assumes the command of the "Dept. of the Southwest" (Mississippi, and East Louisiana).

December 23, 1863 - Confederate attack on Centreville, MO, and the pursuit of the Confederates, including a skirmish (Dec 25) at Pulliam's, where the Federals recapture the men taken by the Rebels. (Dec 23-25)

December 23, 1863 - Federal reconnaissance from Blain's Cross-Roads to Powder Spring Gap, TN.

December 23, 1863 - Skirmish at Mulberry Village, TN, where a Confederate party captures a Union forage train and 6 Federals, tie their hands behind their backs and shoot them execution style.

December 23, 1863 - Skirmish near Culpeper Court House, VA.

December 23, 1864 - The siege of Petersburg is ongoing.

December 23, 1864 - Federal expedition from Baton Rouge to Clinton, LA. (Dec 23-24)

December 23, 1864 - The USS Louisiana, loaded with 350 tons of explosives, is blown up near Fort Fisher, Wilmington, NC, with no damage to the fort.
