December 2, 1802 - Melancthon Smith Wade, American Brigadier General (Union Army), born in Cincinnati, Ohio (d. 1868)

December 2, 1806 - Thomas Jefferson asks Congress to ban all slave importation on January 1, 1808, the earliest date allowed in the U. S. Constitution.

December 2, 1821 - Rufus Barringer, American Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina (d. 1895)

December 2, 1837 - Charles Garrison Harker, American Brigadier General (Union Army), born in Swedesboro, New Jersey (d. 1864)

December 2, 1845 - Manifest Destiny: US President James K. Polk announces to Congress that the United States should aggressively expand into the West

December 2, 1857 - "Free-staters" take control of the Kansas legislature following their election in October.

December 2, 1859 - John Brown is hung in Charleston, Virginia (present-day West Virginia) for the raid on Harper's Ferry.

December 2, 1863 - Lieut. Gen. William J. Hardee, CSA, supersedes Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA, in the command of the Army of Tennessee, at Dalton, GA, after Gen. Bragg asks President Jefferson Davis to be relieved of command following the Confederate setbacks in the Tennessee arena of warfare.

December 2, 1864 - Brig. Gen. Archibald Gracie, Jr., CSA, is mortally wounded during the siege of Petersburg, VA, instantly killed by a Federal artillery shell, the day after his 32nd birthday, as he observed the enemy through his telescope.

December 2, 1864 - Maj. Gen. Sterling Price's, CSA, command reaches Laynesport, AR, ending his latest and last expedition into Missouri.

December 2, 1864 - Skirmish at Buck Head Creek, GA, the "March to the Sea," Campaign by Maj. Gen. Wm. Sherman.

December 2, 1864 - Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Wood, USA, assumes the command of the 4th US Army Corps, because vice Maj. Gen. David S. Stanley, USA, is wounded at the battle of Franklin, TN.

December 2, 1865 - Alabama ratifies the 13th Amendment, the 27th state to do so.

December 2, 1890 - Cadmus M. Wilcox, American Major General (Confederate Army - American Civil War), dies at 66 in Washington,DC.
