Just reading the history of the incident leading to his death and it seemed so unnecessary. Why was such a well connected officer charged with the task of removing a flag ?

I believe that it was probably an ego thing and besides, what could possibly go wrong? Ellsworth and Corporal Francis Brownell the man who killed Ellsworth's attacker. For his actions in killing Ellsworth's attacker, Brownell received a commission in the regular army and a Medal of Honor.

Here is a pic of a Marshall House token in my collection. Issued in 1859 the Alexandria Va hotel issued a cent size token to advertise its business. Like many tokens from the era it circulated as a substitute for a cent. This token is attributed as the first known issue of any metallic coin featuring the French Minerva head. Designed by Robt. Lovett Jr. a prominent engraver of the time. The Minerva head is the exact device that later appears on the confederate cent. This is why the Marshall house token is considered the first confederate cent. Although it was used during the CW it is not considered a CW token because it is dated 1859, CW tokens by definition are dated 1861-1864. It also became a confederate collectible during the war due to the Elmer Ellsworth incident
