This is a D Guard side knife that from my dad's collection. The blade is marked, so I assume it was a repurposed Union sword or bayonet, but since it was dug the markings aren't readable. I thought maybe someone on here who is more knowledgeable on bladed weapons would know right away what type of blade it was.

Interesting D-Guard. The guard is defiantly blacksmith made. Could you post a photo of the pommel end?

The guard is definitely smith worked. I really like the fussy little finial. The wear on the edge has the look of use, not abuse. I bet it whacked a lot of weeds in it’s time. In Spanish speaking countries machetes are used for everything from weeding gardens to clearing brush. This piece probably served the same purpose.

Thousands of CW sabers were cutdown & shipped to Guadalcanal as machetes.
